Arkansas Trooper Who Stopped Wrong-Way Driver Leaves ICU

Arkansas State Police Trooper Roy Moomey was critically injured in a head-on crash while trying to block a suspected drunken driver last week.

An Arkansas State Police trooper, who was critically injured in a crash while trying to stop a wrong-way driver last week, has been released from the Intensive Care Unit.

Trooper Roy Moomey underwent multiple surgeries after his cruiser was struck head-on on Interstate 40 around 3:35 a.m. on Aug. 8 while he attempted to block a suspected drunken driver, according to KARK-TV.

Officials said that driver of the suspect vehicle, 24-year-old Matthew Choate, was killed in the crash.

Crawford County Prosecutor Marc McCune said that Moomey was was released from the ICU at Sparks Hospital and started rehab on Monday. He was moved to a chair and was able to sit there for an hour.

"Roy is really moved by all the support he is getting," McCune, who personally delivered get well cards to the trooper, told the news station.

Moomey -- a trooper first-class of the Highway Patrol Division, Troop H, in Crawford County -- received an award for his role in saving the life of a man who was trapped inside a burning vehicle on Jan. 22, 2015.
