A Tucson Sector Border Patrol agent was killed in a crash on Thursday, officials said.

The agent was involved in a crash while riding a dirt bike while on duty on the Tohono O'odham reservation south of Sells.

A statement released by Customs and Border Protection said Agent Manuel Alvarez was assigned to the Casa Grande Station of the Tucson Sector. The agency said Alvarez is survived by his wife and four children.

No details were released about what happened. An agency spokesman said the department would not release any more information on the incident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Agent Alvarez," said the statement, which was attributed to CBP Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske.

Agent Art del Cueto, president of the Border Patrol agent's union, said Alvarez "was a great guy. He was my classmate in the academy."

Del Cueto declined further comment, saying he was too distraught to talk.
