The detective was investigating a domestic incident when he was shot in the arm by the officer, who was later arrested in Cincinnati.

An Indianapolis police detective was shot by an off-duty officer during the investigation of a domestic incident Friday night.

The detective with the Special Investigations Unit was sent to an apartment complex in the 6700 block of Valley Brook Way around 8 p.m. involving an 18-year veteran of the police department and his wife, according to WRTV.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Major Richard Riddle told reporters that the off-duty officer was already the subject of a criminal investigation by the department. Sources identified the off-duty officer as Adrian Scott Aurs.

"At some point during our SIU detective's investigation, the off-duty IMPD officer came back to the apartment and began shooting in the apartment," Riddle said. "Our on-duty detective who was doing the investigation was struck in his arm. We don't know if he was struck a second time, or whether that bullet passed through and went into his back. Our on-duty detective returned fire, but did not strike the suspect."

The detective was transported to Methodist Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in good condition.

The officer's estranged wife and children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but were uninjured.

After the shooting, the officer fled the scene with his police radio and computer and became engaged in a standoff with Cincinnati police on the Brent Spence Bridge about 100 miles away around 2 a.m.

The officer was eventually taken into custody.

Riddle said the officer would be immediately suspended without pay, and would face criminal charges in Marion County.
