Texas Police Officer, Boy Killed in Pursuit Crash

A Patton Village, Texas police officer and a boy were killed in a crash during a pursuit Sunday night.

Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner responded to the Valero Corner store at SH 242 and US 59 in the Conroe area for a report that a man was urinating on the sidewalk and exposing himself to customers, according to KTRK-TV.

The suspect fled the scene in a two-door Scion TC and attempted to run the officer down and a chase began.

Baumgartner pursued the vehicle on Highway 242 from Interstate 59 when , at the intersection of FM 1485, the suspect ran a light and continued on before the officer's cruiser was struck by a white 1998 Chevy Suburban.

"The force from the crash forced the officer to the immediate right of the intersection and he hit a traffic light pole," Texas Trooper Richard Standifer said. "The SUV, after the crash occurred, due to the severe damage and the force, it was flipped. It came to rest and was upside down on the 1485 side, just off the improved shoulder."

Baumgartner was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and attempts were made to revive him, but efforts were unsuccessful and he was declared dead upon arrival.

An 11-year-old inside the SUV was killed and several others were transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Officials said that the suspect returned to the scene of the crash and was transported to jail and awaits charges which could range from intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault and murder.

Baumgartner is survived by his wife, who works as a dispatcher, and their young daughter.
