A Leon County Sheriff's deputy was injured after a pyrotechnic device unexpectedly detonated during a simulated terrorist attack at the Florida Capitol Monday.
Detective Brendan Brunner was inside the Hazardous Device Team truck storing equipment used in during the drill when the device went off, according to The Democrat.
Brunner was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
"We're concerned about this particular incident obviously," Sheriff Mike Wood told the newspaper. "We are certainly trying to determine exactly what caused the device to detonate. We're just blessed that Brendan was not hurt any worse than he was."
The detective is currently out on medical leave and under the care of a doctor.
The Leon County Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation to determine what caused the device to detonate.
More than 200 first responders from 13 counties took part in the drill as part of the Northwest Florida Regional Domestic Security Task Force.
