Omaha Officers Mourn Beloved Squirrel

The Omaha Police Department is mourning the lost of a dear friend -- a squirrel that they befriended and created a Twitter account for.

OMAHA, Nebraska -- The Omaha Police Department is mourning the lost of a dear friend -- a squirrel that they befriended and created a Twitter account for.

The squirrel -- whose Twitter handle was @OPDSquirrel -- was found dead near Central Police Headquarters downtown on Tuesday, according to The World-Herald.

"We are sad to announce that @OPDSquirrel has been found dead in the parking lot," Officer Michael Bossman announced on Twitter. "We are not investigating."

A picture of Officer Dave Bowes kneeling next to the dead squirrel corpse with his head bowed was posted and followers offered up their condolences. One read: "RIP little buddy. Go nibble on that great nut in the sky."
