Two New Jersey State Police cruisers collided while pursuing a vehicle in Paterson Sunday night.

The chase began when a trooper attempted to stop a Mini Cooper on westbound Interstate 80 in Elmwood Park for a traffic violation, according to The Star-Ledger.

The driver sped away as the trooper exited his patrol car while another trooper spotted the Mini about about a mile west and took up the chase.

Trooper Lawrence Peele said that the driver exited the highway at Market Street in Paterson and through the city ignoring stop signs.

While the trooper gave up the pursuit for safety reasons, the first trooper crashed into the rear of the second trooper's cruiser as he was on the way to assist.

One of the officers was treated for a minor back injury.

The crash is currently under investigation.
