A veteran Sumner County, Tennessee Sheriff's deputy was stabbed Wednesday morning by a suspect who was subsequently shot and killed.
Deputy Gary Pickard was serving an eviction notice at a home located at 287 Chaffin Court just off Airport Road in Gallatin shortly before 9 a.m. when the confrontation took place, according to The Gallatin News Examiner.
Pickard suffered a laceration on the left side of his body and was transported to Skyline Medical Center. Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford told reporters that he expected the deputy to be released later in the day.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland told the newspaper that Pickard accompanied several members of the local housing authority to home where they encountered Laronda Sweatt.
Sweatt became combative while the eviction papers were being served and stabbed the deputy, officials said.
Pickard ran back to his patrol vehicle and called for back up. Tree Gallatin police officers soon arrived on the scene. As one of the responding officers appraoched Sweatt, she again became combative and was fatally shot by the officer.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
