A cop-killer convicted ambush-style shooting death of a Texas deputy five years ago was sentenced to death Friday morning.
Mark Anthony Gonzalez was previously found guilty of opening fire on Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Vann while he was stopped at a traffic signal on May 28, 2011, according to KSAT-TV.
Gonzalez's formal sentencing had been delayed pending completion of a competency trial in which he was found competent.
"You are hereby sentenced, in accordance with Texas law, to death," 175th District Court Judge Mary Roman announced.
Yvonne Vann, the deputy's widow, spoke of her loss following Gonzalez's sentencing.
"I miss my husband. Every single day, I miss him," she said. "I will never have any more alone time with my husband. And my time now is truly alone in every sense of the word."
Vann said that the actions of Gonzalez, who showed no emotion at the hearing, were "unforgiveable, and in my heart and in my mind, it will never be forgivable."
Gonzalez's attorney, Paul Goeke, said his client would file an appeal to the verdict.
