Three people -- including the suspected gunman -- were taken into custody Wednesday following the shooting of a Phoenix police officer earlier in the day.

Officials said that 26-year-old Michael James Rogers shot the 8-year veteran of the force multiple times during a traffic stop near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue around 2:45 a.m., according to KNXV-TV.

The officer, who was able to call for help as the suspects drove away from the scene, was saved by his bulletproof vest. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition were he underwent surgery for his injuries. Police officials said he is expected to survive.

Rogers was located by police at a home in the area. The two suspects were believed to be in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The suspect vehicle was found abandoned near the scene.
