Pennsylvania Chief Killed While Cleaning Gun

Bessemer Borough Police Chief Edward Macri suffered a fatal wound while cleaning a .40 caliber pistol alone at his home.

The police chief in Bessemer, Pa. died Sunday afternoon after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun.

Police Chief Edward Macri suffered the fatal wound while cleaning a .40 caliber pistol alone at his home and was discovered a short time later by his girlfriend, according to KDKA-TV.

The 56-year-old was taken to Jameson Hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour and a half later.

Upon his retirement after 27 years of service with the New Castle Police Department, Macri served with the Shenango Township Police Department before serving as police chief of the Bessemer Borough Police Department. 

"As a community, we're all deeply saddened," Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Joseph Vascetti said. "He faithfully served the community in the last several years and he'll be missed."

The investigating is ongoing and no foul play is suspected.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
