Utah Trooper Returns Home Following Crash

Trooper David Schiers was hit and pinned by a car hydroplaning out of control on a highway on July 6.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was back at his home Monday following a dramatic crash two weeks ago.

Trooper David Schiers had been recovering at Intermountain Medical Center since he was hit and pinned by a car hydroplaning out of control on I-15 near Cedar City on July 6, according to KSL-TV.

The crash was captured on dashcam video and made national headlines.

Schiers suffered a broken back, broken leg, several broken ribs and a punctured lung.

"I'm sore everywhere," he told the news station after leaving the hospital for his home in Parowan. "But, with the amount of damage I saw on my own film, I think I'm lucky to be alive."

Schiers was helping a motorist who had crashed in a rain storm in the center median of I-15 near Cedar City. While he was waiting for help, another car lost control on the wet surface and slammed into the disabled car and the trooper.

"I just remember the car coming, and then it's more or less a blur," he said. "It looks bad," he said while watching the video, "but I've seen bad before. It's hard for me to put myself on the other side of that camera."

The trooper has several months of physical therapy ahead of him, but is expected to make a full recovery.
