San Angelo Police Sgt. Korby Kennedy was killed Thursday after an SUV struck his motorcycle.

A San Angelo, Texas police officer died Thursday night after an SUV crashed into his motorcycle.

Sgt. Korby Kennedy was part of an escort for boats participating in this weekend's Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races when a Nissan Rogue SUV pulled out of a private parking lot and collided with his unit around 6:06 p.m. on Kickerbocker Road, according to The Standard-Times.

The 20-year veteran of the police department was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m.

"It's a sad day for our community," Police Chief Tim Vasquez said during a press conference. "We lost an officer and a very close friend. Someone we would consider a brother."

Two people were in the SUV that struck Kennedy's motorcycle. The passenger was taken to the hospital. Officials said that the injuries were not significant. It is unclear if any charges will be filed against the driver.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently investigating the crash.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
