Cincinnati police officer died after he was critically wounded in a shootout Friday morning.
Officer Sonny Kim died at UC Medical Center following the shooting that occurred near the intersection of Roe Street and Whetsel Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., according to WLWT-TV.
Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said that after officers arrived on the scene, gunfire broke out. Both Kim and the suspect were killed.
"We're not sure how many rounds were fired. We just know that multiple shots were fired between the suspect and responding officers," he told reporters. "It's quite a scene. We will be here for a long time, and it's not a good day for us."
Multiple of police cruisers escorted Kim's ambulance to UC Medical Center after he was shot.
Blackwell said that Kim was wearing his bulletproof vest during the incident, but that they are not yet sure where he was shot.
"It rattles me as the chief. It rattles the city manager, this entire department, this entire city," Blackwell said.
The shooting is currently under investigation.
Funeral arrangements for Kim are pending.
