A Rio Rancho, N.M. police officer died at a hospital after being wounded Monday night.
Officer Greg Benner made a traffic stop near Southern and Pine Tree around 8 p.m. when vehicle containing a man and a woman took off, according to KOAT-TV.
Officials said the officer stopped the vehicle again, which is when the suspects shot at him.
Benner was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The 49-year-old officer had been with the department for about four years and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
"He was well-liked by everybody on the department and of course, losing him is going to have a great impact with the officers on the department," Rio Rancho Police Captain Paul Rogers told the news station.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office took one of the alleged suspects into custody after deputies stopped a silver sedan near Rio Bravo and Broadway in Albuquerque's South Valley overnight.
Police are still searching for the second suspect and have issued a BOLO for a dark-colored Dodge Durango with the New Mexico license plate 331-RAT.
