Texas Police Officer Killed in Cruiser Crash

A Pearsall, Texas police officer was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon.

Officer Mike Villarreal was transporting a juvenile to the Juvenile Detention Facility in Jourdandton when his police cruiser collided with another vehicle, according to KSAT-TV.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Highway 97 when the officer's vehicle collided head-on with a flat-bed pickup truck carrying portable toilet units. The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently investigating the crash.

Villarreal died at the scene and the driver of the pickup and the juvenile being transported were unconscious when paramedics arrived and were flown to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Villarreal had served with the Pearsall Police Department for less than one year.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
