An Ocala, Fla. police officer died after he was accidentally shot during firearms training Monday afternoon.
Officer Jared Forsyth was fatally wounded around 3 p.m. at the Lowell Correctional Institution, according to WFTV.
The 33-year-old officer was participating in routine firearms training when he was struck by a bullet discharged from another officer's weapon. Officials said the officer was unloading the gun when it discharged, causing the round to ricochet off a bench before it hit Forsyth.
Forsyth was wearing a bulletproof vest during the incident, but the bullet went through his arm and entered his side, which was not covered.
The three-year veteran of the police force was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
"Words can't express the sorrow I feel for losing an officer under my watch," Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham said at a press conference. "We're family. It's like losing a family member, like a brother passed away."
Forsyth is survived by his mother and stepfather.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
