Officer George Nissen was assaulted while attempting to break up a large fight on Feb. 13, 2005, according to The Officer Down Memorial Page.

The 27-year law enforcement veteran responded with other officers to a disturbance at a bar on North Manheim Road when he was attacked by one of the men in the fight. Nissen was thrown to the ground and struck his head on the pavement.

While Nissen initially believed he was OK, he began to feel ill during his shift. He was taken to a local hospital the following day where it was discovered he had suffered a concussion.

The concussion required several surgeries. During one of the surgeries, he suffered a serious complication, which resulted in him becoming a paraplegic and unable to speak.
