A Berkeley Springs, W.Va. police dog died after the vehicle it was in crashed into a creek Thursday night.

K-9 Fritzi was traveling with his handler, Officer Lance Marshall, when their vehicle was involved in the wreck on a one-lane bridge over Sleepy Creek around 10:30 p.m., according to WHAG-TV.

Officials said that Marshall was able to escaped the vehicle after it submerged, but could not save his partner because the water was too high and his gear was too heavy.

Marshall was hypothermic, but was treated and released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.

The department's dive unit was called to the scene and remained there until about 1:30 a.m. working to get the car out of the water.

The city is currently making plans to bury Fritzi, who was with the police department for about one year.
