Guam Officer Dies After SWAT Training

Feb. 17, 2015
Officer Siegfred Mortera died three days after collapsing during SWAT training.

A Guam police officer who collapsed during SWAT training on Feb. 11 was pronounced dead on Saturday.

Siegfred Mortera, 49, was one of three SWAT trainees who went to a hospital last week because of medical issues, according to The Pacific Daily News.

The 17-year veteran of the force known by his colleagues as "Dove," was listed in critical condition at Naval Hospital Guam up until the time of his death.

Lt. Michael Arcangel, assistant officer in charge of the 17-person SWAT trainee unit, said Mortera collapsed while running during physical training.

What caused Mortera to collapse during the training at Eagles Field on Wednesday is still unclear.

"As we mourn the loss of our brother in blue, the chief of police, along with the men and women of the Guam Police Department convey our deepest condolences to the Mortera family," an advisory from the police department reads. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dove’s wife, parents, children and grandchildren."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
