A Western Michigan police officer was shot and wounded Thursday but is expected to be OK.
The Wyoming officer was investigating a domestic assault complaint at a house in the 200 block of Himes Street SE and found a man and woman inside being "somewhat combative," according to The Grand Rapids Press.
Officers were able to get the woman out of the home, but were made aware there were firearms inside the residence. The man exited the back of the house and opened fire on the officers. Officials said that one officer was struck below his protective vest, near his gun belt.
Police Chief James Carmody told the newspaper that he spoke to the officer in the hospital and said he is in good spirits.
After officers returned fire, the suspect ran through the neighborhood while firing additional shot before being cornered on Abbie Street. He continued to fire toward officers, who returned fire and struck the suspect.
The suspected gunman was listed in serious condition at a local hospital and was under guard by Grand Rapids Police and Michigan State Police personnel.
Kentwood Police and Michigan State Police are assisting with the investigation.
