The assistant police chief of the Ball, La. Police Department died of an apparent heart attack while working the overnight shift on Jan. 10.
Officials said that Assistant Chief Carl Bordelon was found dead inside Town Hall Saturday morning, according to The Town Talk.
Bordelon was assigned to the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift and a family member saw him on patrol around 2:30 a.m.
The 51-year-old rose from patrolman to assistant police chief during his 20 years with the department.
Bordelon served under four mayors and five police chiefs during his career.
"He was a fixture in this town," Ball Mayor Neil Kavanagh said. "Everyone knew him. Everyone loved him."
Police Chief Nate Ussery said that Bordelon was always willing to lend a hand. "Carl was someone was always willing to help the new guys," he told the newspaper. "He would help with our investigations or whatever was needed. He liked to help.”
Bordelon was scheduled to marry longtime girlfriend Alicia Leggett on March 28. Other survivors include two sons, Christopher and Jacob.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 14.
