Arizona Motorcycle Officer Killed in Crash

Chandler Officer David Payne was struck and killed Friday morning while stopped at a red light.

A Chandler, Ariz. motorcycle officer was killed in a crash Friday morning by a man driving on a suspended license.

Officer David Payne, 37, was stopped at a red light near Chandler Boulevard and Dobson Road around 1 a.m. when he was rear-ended by a vehicle, according to KNXV-TV.

Payne, who was assigned the overnight DUI patrol, transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"This is an officer that wanted to work on a motorcycle, wanted to do DUI enforcement," said police spokesman Sgt. Joe Favazzo. "This is what he wanted to do."

Police officials told the news station that the driver, Brian Yazzie, fled the scene, but was stopped by officers shortly after the crash.

Yazzie was taken into custody and will be booked on manslaughter, endangerment and hit and run charges.

Police said an 11-month-old child was in Yazzie's vehicle at the time of the crash, but was uninjured.

Payne, a 7-year veteran of the Chandler Police Department, leaves behind a child.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
