A veteran Dothan, Ala. police officer died Monday morning after he collapsed during a training run.
Sgt. Jeffrey W. Garrett was transported to Flowers Hospital after experiencing pain in his side and collapsing during a run on the Westgate Park trail shortly after 8 a.m., according to The Dothan Eagle.
Garrett was participating in a two-mile training run with other officers when he suddenly collapsed. The other officers immediately began CPR until paramedics arrived and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“He most recently took an assignment as the training supervisor and was getting himself in shape," Major Steve Parrish told the newspaper. "He’s going to be sorely missed by everybody here. He's one of those guys that you probably never could replace.”
The 22-year veteran of the force is survived by his wife, three children and two stepchildren.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
