Oswaldo Torres Quiroz allegedly slashed the wrist of Asbury Park Officer Carl Christie with a knife.

A knife-wielding man was shot by police after he attacked an Asbury Park, N.J. police officer during a struggle Monday.

Officials say that 22-year-old Oswaldo Torres Quiroz slashed the wrist of Officer Carl Christie with a steak knife before attempting to grab his weapon, according to The Asbury Park Press.

Officer Johnny Washington fired on Quiroz during the attack, wounding him.

Before slashing Christie in the wrist, First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Marc LeMieux said that he had attempted to stab him in the stomach, but that his protective vest stopped the knife.

Christie sustained a serious laceration to his wrist and finger and was treated at a local hospital and released. Quiroz's injuries were "significant" but not believed to be life-threatening.

Washington was also treated and released at a local hospital after complaining of respiratory problems after the incident.

Quiroz has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, third-degree resisting arrest, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth-degree possession of a prohibited weapon.
