GALVESTON, Texas -- Police say an 8-year-old boy was being treated for a gunshot wound Thursday after being shot in the face by another boy as they played at a Texas City apartment.

The child was transported Thursday to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. His condition wasn't immediately available.

Texas City Police Capt. Joe Stanton said the shooting was reported to police at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The victim, whose name was being withheld by police because of his age, was playing unsupervised with two other boys, ages 7 and 9, in a unit at the Harbor Oaks Apartments.

Police said the 7-year-old found a handgun inside and it discharged, striking the 8-year-old boy in the face.

The adult responsible for supervising the children is under investigation, Stanton said, and the incident is being reviewed by Texas Child Protective Services.
