N.C. Deputy, Suspect Wounded in Standoff

A Rutherford County, N.C. deputy and suspect were wounded during an overnight standoff.

A Rutherford County, N.C. Sheriff's deputy and suspect were wounded during a standoff that began Monday night and went into early Tuesday morning.

Deputies responded to a home on Oak Forest Drive in Forest City shortly before 8 p.m., according to WYFF-TV.

A caller told 911 dispatchers that Kevin Clifford Marks was armed with a shotgun, making threats and believed to be on meth.

When deputies arrived they attempted to get Marks to leave the home, but he stayed inside. A negotiator tried for hours to get Marks to come outside and that the suspect started firing at deputies when they tried to enter.

"When we tried to get in with the emergency response team," Sheriff Chris Francis told the news station. "We were blessed to have the shields protect them from first round. They retreated and some of them had minor scratches."

Attempts to negotiate with Marks continued on and off over the next four. Marks began firing again and struck on of the deputies in the upper torso.

The 12-year veteran of the agency was first taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. He's was listed in stable condition.

The exchange of gunfire continued between Rutherford County deputies and Marks, who surrender after tear gas was used.

While being checked out at a hospital after being taken into custody, it was discovered that Marks suffered a gunshot wound.

The incident is currently under investigation.
