A driver found guilty of vehicular homicide in a crash that killed a Massachusetts State Trooper four years ago was sentenced Monday to one year in jail.

Sgt. Douglas Weddleton was killed on June 16, 2010, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Anthony Perry Jr. while working a construction detail on I-95 in Mansfield, according to The Enterprise.

Perry was found guilty of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, a misdemeanor, by a Fall River jury earlier this month. He was sentenced to serve one year in jail and a three-year probation upon his release and also lost his license for 15 years.

Perry was also ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and perform 50 hours of community service annually.

The maximum sentence for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation is 2 1/2 years.

Perry was one of two drivers charged in Weddleton’s death. No trial date has been set yet for the other driver, Kenneth Weiand.

The incident occurred after Weddleton parked his state cruiser across the highway’s off-ramp, blocking it to protect construction workers. That's when police say Weiand attempted to drive his vehicle around the parked cruiser.

After Weddleton pulled him over to speak with him, he was struck and killed by Perry’s vehicle.
