SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Two shootings in front of convenience stores left one man dead and another in critical condition Monday night.

Officers were called to a Valero gas station on the Northeast Side around 8:30 for a man in his 30s who was shot multiple times and killed.

An altercation started down the street from the business in the 1500 block of Austin Highway, according to the San Antonio Police Department. More than a dozen shell casings -- appearing to be from a handgun -- were recovered there, authorities said.

The victim, who has not yet been identified by police, tried to drive away from the spot where the initial confrontation was but was followed by the shooter, authorities said. He was shot as he tried to run into the store.

A tarp covered the man's body just outside the convenience store Monday night, and his vehicle's windows had gunshot holes.

Police said they do not believe the shooting was gang-related. A description of the suspect was not available, other than that the shooter was driving a dark-colored minivan.

About an hour later, outside a West Side convenience store 10 miles away, a man in his mid- to late-20s was shot several times and taken away in an ambulance.

Police believe the man was shot at Mario's Store, at the corner of Guadalupe Street and Hamilton Avenue, then stumbled across the street. He collapsed in the parking lot of Sunglo, a neighboring convenience store.

Police arrived there around 9:45 p.m. They were not initially sure what kind of a weapon was used or what prompted the shooting. The man could die from his injuries, authorities said.

In the street was a bundle of what appeared to be the man's belongings, and police had the roadway blocked off with crime scene tape late Monday night.
