Texas Police Officer Recovering After Shooting

Fredericksburg Police Officer Bradley Durst was shot during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.

A 31-year-old San Angelo man is facing attempted capital murder charges after police say he shot an officer during a traffic stop and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through multiple counties.

Fredericksburg police officer Bradley Durst, 29, stopped a car about 1:40 a.m. Saturday and was shot twice as he approached the vehicle on foot, according to police.

The driver and shooter was identified as Robert A. Rendon, who drove south toward San Antonio, while a Gillespie County sheriff’s deputy drove Durst to a local hospital.

Durst was transferred to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Saturday and was stabilized.

During the chase about 3 a.m. following the shooting, it was reported that Rendon fired more shots at officers in pursuit and a San Antonio officer returned fire, but Rendon wasn’t hit.

About 4 a.m., Rendon lost control of the car, which rolled over on Interstate 10 near Ackerman Road on San Antonio’s east side. He sustained injuries that weren’t life-threatening and was arrested.

Police said he was armed with an assault rifle with two high-capacity magazines and a semi-automatic handgun.
