ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- A man is dead after he was shot and killed by a St. Charles police officer Wednesday night, police say.

The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. Police responded to a disturbance in the first block of Clark Court, near St. Charles High School.

Witnesses told police that the man, 52, was threatening neighbors. He had set off of fireworks, which caused a fire, police said.

Police say the man was holding a weapon, which they did not describe. Police tried to negotiate with the man, telling him to drop the weapon. Instead, he threatened the officers and moved toward them, and an officer then shot him.

The police officer, a 13-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.
