A Huntsville, Ala. SWAT team member was wounded by a shotgun blast and the suspected gunman was killed during a shootout early Friday morning.

Police responded to domestic violence call in the 2000 block of Stanford drive around 1 a.m. and were initially unable to locate the suspect, according to The Huntsville Times.

Officials say that when contact was made with William Arthur Stogner, the armed man began arguing with the officers before opening fire on them.

A second shootout took place around 2 a.m. and the gunman made it back inside the home. Police were able to enter the home and more shots were fired in an exchange that fatally wounded Stogner.

The wound police officer was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of "moderate" injuries and is expected to recover.

Police Chief Lewis Morris said the suspect's wife and children were able to get away at the time of the initial call and that none of them were injured.

The incident is currently under investigation.
