N.M. Police Website Down Following 'Cyber Attack'

March 31, 2014
The Internet "hacktivist" group Anonymous rallied users to target Albuquerque websites Saturday night.

The Albuquerque Police Department website is down and remained dark as of 10:50 a.m. Sunday morning, police said, due to what they called a cyber attack.

IT staffed noticed "unusual activity" earlier this morning, said APD spokesman Simon Drobik. Drobik said that the site is not connected to any critical services, and public safety communications and response services are not affected.

He said the IT staff is working "around the clock" to fix the problem. The website CABQ.Gov/Police appeared to be down for all users as of 12:25 p.m., according to DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com.

The Internet "hacktivist" group Anonymous rallied users to target two city websites Saturday night, but appeared to have changed course around 9 p.m., calling instead for an "information war" and issuing a request for better APD training and other improvements to the department.

A crowd of protesters has also assembled Downtown to protest APD a call to action by the Internet group.

Anonymous had earlier issued a video calling APD "militarized thugs" and promising retaliation for the March 16 shooting death of James Boyd, a mentally ill homeless man, who was seen on APD helmet-camera video turning away from officers as they opened fire upon him.
