Chicago police shot and wounded a man as he stood on a balcony and started pointing a gun at a sergeant, authorities said.
Officers had been called to 61st Street and Sangamon Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood around 10 p.m. Monday and found the man, in his mid-20s, walking around the neighborhood waving a gun, police said. The officers chased him into an apartment and he ran out on the balcony with the gun pointed to his head, police said.
An Englewood District sergeant tried to talk him down, according to Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Patrick Camden. The man told police they'd have to shoot him if they wanted him to drop the weapon, then he started lowering the gun toward the sergeant, Camden said.
Another officer opened fire, hitting the man in his side, Camden said. After getting hit, the man told police he didn't need help getting into the ambulance because he had been shot before, Camden said.
The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, but his condition was not available.
