A Norfolk Southern police officer was beaten and choked near a Metra station late Sunday night.

A 39-year-old Norfolk Southern police officer was beat and choked near an Ashburn neighborhood Metra station late Sunday night.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center after the altercation, which happened about 10:20 p.m. near the Wrightwood Metra station near 79th and Kedzie avenues.

A number of people called 911 to report the fight, police said.

It's not clear what prompted the attack but it followed the officer confronting a 24-year-old man for trespassing. The officer was in uniform next to his marked SUV when the attack happened.

The 24-year-old, a resident of the 8100 block of South Spaulding Avenue, was taken into custody within a couple minutes.

The officer is expected to recover from his wounds.
