Police say a 46-year-old man in the Anniston City Jail bit an officer as he tried to restrain the inmate Friday.

Terrell Lee Laird Jr., 46, of Anniston, was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, a felony, according to a warrant for his arrest.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said Laird had been in the city jail since Dec. 23, when he was arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.

George said that on Jan. 3, Laird began acting disruptive and when an officer tried to put Laird into a restraint chair, Laird bit the officer in the left forearm.

The officer, who suffered a cut on his arm, was treated at Regional Medical Center, and returned to work the same day, the captain said.

Laird was in the Calhoun County Jail on Monday with bond set at $10,000, according to a warrant for his arrest. He is to appear in court on Feb. 13.
