Virginia Police K-9 Breaks Leg During Response

Wincester Police K-9 Kota was attempting to get to a suspect when the dog fell through the ceiling.

A Winchester, Va. police dog broke its leg while responding to a reported burglary Friday night.

K-9 Kota was attempting to get to one of the suspects who was hiding in a crawl space when the dog fell through the ceiling to the floor below, according to WHAG-TV.

Police were able to apprehend two men in connection to the break-in.

Officials said that Kota is set to undergo surgery on Monday for the injuries sustained in the fall.

The police department thanked the public for their support on its Facebook page:

"The Winchester Police Department has received a tremendous outpouring of support from communities near and far for Kota and the members of our department. We would like to thank each and every one of you who has sent and posted messages in support of Kota, who is truly a hero."
