Customs and Border Protection Officer Dies

Customs and Border Protection Officer Darrell Jean Windhaus died while boarding a vessel Sunday.

A Customs and Border Protection officer died while on the job at a port in Brownsville, Texas on Sunday.

Officer Darrell Jean Windhaus, 71, was boarding one of the vessels at the port when he collapsed, according to KGBT-TV.

EMS personnel were called to the scene immediately to assist, but efforts to revive Windhaus were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the port.

Officials said that Windhaus spent 42 years serving the federal government through ths U.S. military, Immigration and Naturalization Services as well as serving as a Customs and Border Protection officer.

He is survived by his daughter, sister and brother.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
