Ohio Officer Shot, Suspect Killed in Shootout

A suspect was killed and a Troy, Ohio police officer was injured in a shootout early Sunday morning.

A suspect was killed and a Troy, Ohio police officer was injured in a shootout early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Jeff Kunkleman was shot in the leg during the exchange of gunfire on West Franklin Street that occurred around 2 a.m., according to The Dayton Daily News.

The officer was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and is recovering from the injury at home.

The suspect, 30-year-old Franklin Jones III, was killed in the gun battle involving three Troy police officers and one Miami County Sheriff's deputy.

The law enforcement officers responded to calls reporting a shooting in the area. Sammy Butler, 24, was later found in an alley between West Franklin and Monroe streets suffering from two gunshot wounds to his buttocks.

An officer spotted Jones and gunfire broke out. One witness told the newspaper that she heard at least 30 rounds fired.

The officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the incident.
