SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Seven people were injured Monday evening in a volley of gunfire that broke out near a park in East Oakland and spanned three city blocks, police said.
Residents first reported shots fired at 6:08 p.m. near 96th Avenue and Olive Street near Verdese Carter Park, Officer Johnna Watson said.
After officers arrived, they discovered a second crime scene nearby at 94th Avenue and Sunnyside Street. In all, seven victims suffered gunshot wounds, Watson said, and two were in critical condition. The victims were between the ages of 23 and 31.
Chief Sean Whent, who visited the area just after nightfall, called the violence brazen and outrageous. He was unaware how many shooters were involved.
"Obviously we're hoping some people will come forward and provide some information that would help us solve it," Whent said. "We're actively investigating it."
