Weekend (Oct. 25-27)

Three Albuquerque, N.M. police officers and a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy were wounded Saturday in a violent confrontation that ended in the death of the gunman.

Officials say Christopher Chase -- who had a tattoo that read "Cop Killer" -- appears to have put much effort into planning the shooting spree in which he stole a police cruiser before opening fire on the officers.

Roseville, Calif. police said a wanted parolee fired first in a shootout that left six officers injured and led to an hours-long standoff before he surrendered.

One Roseville police officer who suffered a jaw wound and a federal agent shot in the leg remained hospitalized Saturday in serious condition while four other officers injured by shrapnel were treated and released.

A Lansford, Pa. police officer killed himself Friday night after he took a fellow police officer hostage.

Officials said that David Midas committed suicide after he took the other officer hostage and forced him to ride with him in a police cruiser.

Nearly a century after being slain in the line of duty, the name of a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy will be placed on the Oregon Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Deputy Charles H. Basye was beaten to death by an escaping prisoner armed with a flat iron at the county jail on June 12, 1917.

Monday (Oct. 28)

A union lawyer says a private charitable fund created to help pay for the mental health care of first responders and others workers affected by the mass shooting at Sand Hook Elementary school falls short of what's needed.

Just $218,361 was donated as of Sept. 30, while Attorney Eric Brown suggested the fund probably requires closer to $10 million.

New York's attorney general has asked a state judge to release sealed documents about the 1971 riot and retaking of Attica state prison.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wants the court to open hundreds of detailed pages about investigations into the nation's bloodiest prison rebellion.

The new head of the FBI was officially installed during a ceremony and was praised by President Barack Obama.

FBI Director James Comey took over last month for Robert Mueller, who stepped down after 12 years in the post.

Students returning to classes at Sparks Middle School in Nevada were greeted by extra police officers following a fatal schoolyard shooting the previous week.

Police say 13-year-old Micah Crooks fatally shot math teacher Michael Landsberry outside of the school shortly before the bell rang to begin classes.

Tuesday (Oct. 29)

An Asheville, N.C. police officer was killed when his cruiser ran off of a bridge.

Officer Robert Bingaman was driving on Interstate 20 when the wreck occurred around 1 p.m., sending the vehicle off of the Jeff Bowen Bridge onto Riverside Drive.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was saved by a cell phone charger after being shot by a suspect.

The tip of the cell phone charger blocked the bullet, which embedded in the device. Another deputy also was wounded during the incident that ended with the suspected gunman dead in the exchange of gunfire.

A Sonoma County, Calif. Sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a 13-year-old holding a AK-47 replica toy gun has been the target of threats.

Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo Duenas said the office was dealing with the threats and would, if necessary, take measures to protect Deputy Erick Gelhaus.

Oklahoma authorities recaptured two of four inmates who broke out of an jail by climbing through a trap door above a shower.

Caddo County Sheriff Gene Cain said Dylan Ray Three Irons and Prime Brown were taken back into custody Monday, while they were still searching for Anthony James Mendonca and Triston Cheadle.

Wednesday (Oct. 30)

A Pontiac, Ill. police officer and his K-9 partner were killed when their cruiser was struck by another vehicle.

Officer Casey Kohlmeier and his dog, Draco, were in their marked police vehicle in a median turnaround when they were hit shortly after 9:30 p.m.

A Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy wounded in a New Mexico shootout that left three Albuquerque officers injured and a suspect dead remained in critical condition.

Deputy Robin Hopkins is recovering at the University of New Mexico Hospital following the Oct. 26 shooting in which officials say Christopher Chase opened fire before being gunned down.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled this week that the same-sex partner of a fallen Missouri Highway Patrol trooper is not eligible to receive death benefits.

Cpl. Dennis Engelhard was killed in a crash on an icy highway on Christmas Day 2009 and was survived by Kelly Glossip, his partner of almost 15 years.

As part of Alabama lawsuits settled this week with the DOJ and civil rights groups over the state's immigration law, policies were changed for law enforcement.

The state will now specify that law enforcement cannot stop someone "for the purpose of ascertaining that person's immigration status or because of a belief that the person lacks lawful immigration status."

Thursday (Oct. 31)

Following the Red Sox World Series win, Boston police took to the streets, and for the most part had a smooth time keeping the city safe.

Officers set up barriers to funnel the crowds away from Fenway Park and mounted police and officers on bicycles patrolled the area. The police department later thanked the "tens of thousands" of Red Sox fans who took the warnings sent out on Twitter throughout the night seriously.

A Stafford, Texas police officer is asking the public for information on the two suspected gang members sought in the shooting that wounded her on Saturday.

Officer Ann Carrizales was shot after pulling over three men at a mobile home park after she had seen their sedan idling at a green light with a blinking turn signal.

A Miami-Dade, Fla. police officer is recovering after he was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver at a gas station near Miami International Airport.

Police say that Officer Mario Gutierrez was trying stop a man from trying to set fire to the gas station when he was attacked.

Puerto Rico's police chief has submitted his resignation as the U.S. territory prepares to reform the agency.

Police Chief Hector Pesquera said he would step down on Nov. 15, more than a year after he was appointed to lead the department federal prosecutors have accused of corruption, illegal killings and civil rights violations.

Friday (Nov. 1)

A federal appeals court blocked a judge's order requiring changes to the NYPD's "Stop-and-Frisk" tactics.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also took the unusual step of removing Judge Shira Scheindlin from the case.

The head of the U.S. Border Patrol says agents made about 420,000 arrests in the past year.

Arrests were up 15 percent from the previous year. It is the second consecutive year that arrests increased since the Border Patrol recorded a near 40-year low in 2011.
