Injured Florida Sheriff's Deputy Talks About Pursuit

Broward County Deputy Jeff Hurt talked about his trauma following the pursuit of a burglary suspect.

One of two Broward Sheriff's deputies, injured while chasing a burglary suspect, was talking about his trauma Thursday.

Deputy Jeff Hurt, a 23-year veteran, suffered cuts and bruises Sept. 19 when fleeing suspect Joshua Boyce, 34, crashed into Hurt's patrol car, officials said.

"He hit the right rear passenger door of my unit and spun me around," Hurt said, according to WFOR-Ch. 4. "[Boyce] never hit the brakes, he never slowed, he never veered."

Fellow Deputy Mike Gardner suffered a broken leg and ribs as well as cuts and bruises when he was dragged by the getaway car, investigators said. Both deputies are out of the hospital.

Boyce was shot in the leg during his flight from the scene of a burglary in Pompano Beach but he kept on driving until he crashed into Hurt in Deerfield Beach, detectives said.

"Someone told me they estimated [he was going] between 55 to 60 miles per hour," Hurt said. "One of the sergeants that was behind me said my car actually lifted off the ground."

Boyce was arrested at Hillsboro Boulevard and State Road A1A.

Hurt said he feels lucky to be alive but he wouldn't change a thing.

"This guy put a deputy on the ground and he was going to harm [and] kill more people," Hurt said. "I'd have to do it again."
