A man who tried to break up a fight between two brothers was fatally stabbed by one of them, prosecutors said in court Saturday.
Bail was set at $600,000 for Robert Moore, 23, charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in the early hours of Friday outside his home on the 700 block of North Central Avenue.
The victim, Tommie Bates, 24, of the 5900 block of West Iowa Street, was pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m. Friday at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital after sustaining a stab wound to his chest, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Moore's brother had gotten a phone call saying Moore had been in a fight during a night of drinking with his friends, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Amanda Pillsbury said in bond court.
Moore's brother and the victim went to Moore's home to check on him, and found him lying in the street, Pillsbury said. When the pair tried to get him inside the apartment, Moore became aggressive and shoved his brother.
Moore then went into the apartment and came back with a knife in each hand, according to Pillsbury, and began to exchange blows with his brother.
The victim tried to break up the fight, but Moore stabbed him on the right side of his chest, Pillsbury said.
Bates was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died.
Moore was taken to West Suburban Hospital for treatment, at which point he uttered to an officer, "I stabbed them all, I stabbed Tommie, Arron, but I didn't stab the pregnant girl," according to police records.
