LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Police shot and killed an armed suspect along Van Nuys Boulevard in front of a strip mall Sunday after he allegedly shot and wounded another man, officials said. --

The fatal shooting took place around noon in the 12700 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, just east of Glenoaks Boulevard., according to Los Angeles police.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at or near a Little Cesar's Pizza, encountered the armed man and then officers shot and killed the suspect, said Officer Cleon Joseph.

LAPD Sgt. John Kennedy said police witnessed the suspect shooting at a man before they shot at him. Kennedy said that five police officers shot at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire officials.

The wounded victim was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition, said LAPD Officer Cleon Joseph. He was shot in one of his biceps, treated and later released, Kennedy said.

The body of the barefoot suspect remained in the middle of the street, mostly covered by a white sheet, on Sunday.

Van Nuys Boulevard was shut down between Glenoaks Boulevard and Borden Avenue as police investigated.

A group of people who said they could be related to the suspect anxiously waited at the scene for more information.

The call first came in at 11:52 a.m. and police units arrived within two minutes, Kennedy said.
