As an arrest was being made, an officer's gun accidentally discharged, striking the man in the thigh.

An armed robbery suspect wounded by Milwaukee police Monday was shot accidentally, according to a police spokesman.

The 29-year-old man was recovering at a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury following the shooting that took place about 12:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of N. 53rd St., Sgt. Mark Stanmeyer said.

According to Stanmeyer, the man is believed to be one of two men who robbed a man of his car and money at gunpoint in the 4700 block of N. 48th St.

After police spotted the car near N. 53rd and W. Melvina streets, the men fled on foot and officers caught the 29-year-old between two houses.

As the man was being arrested, a gun belonging to a 30-year-old officer with 12 years on the department accidentally discharged, striking the man in the thigh, Stanmeyer said.

A handgun was recovered from the pavement near the stolen car, and police were looking for the second robber later Monday, he said.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duty while the shooting is under investigation, Stanmeyer said.
