Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:
Weekend (June 7-9):
A 23-year-old went on a 15-minute rampage Friday afternoon in Santa Monica, Calif. as he killed his father and brother at their home before fatally shooting three people as he opened fired on vehicles and bystanders nearby.
Police gunned down John Zawahri on the campus of Santa Monica College amid the chaos.
Sunday was a tragic day for law enforcement in the Mexican state of Guerrero as a group of armed men stormed a prison, releasing nine inmates and killing two corrections officers in the process.
The weekend wasn't only dominated by bad news as two Monroe County Sheriff's deputies helped rescue a deer with its head stuck in a Doritos bag.
The deer calmly waited for the deputies to approach as they safely removed the bag before it scampered away.
Monday (June 10)
An NYPD officer had a close call after he was shot in the foot with his partner's gun during an scuffle with a emotionally disturbed man at Harlem Hospital.
Officers Fausto Gomez and John Chiodi were escorting the handcuffed suspect into the hospital around 5:30 a.m. when he managed to get control of Chiodi's gun before shooting Gomez.
Chicago police officers also found themselves in a risky situation after they drove into a gunfight in the city's Far South Side around 8:35 p.m.
The officers were in an unmarked car when they witnessed an exchange of gunfire near. They stopped the vehicle and left on foot in pursuit of a man holding a gun.
Officials said the suspect pointed the gun at police, drawing fire from at least one officer, but the man was not struck and was taken into custody.
Apple made some big announcements during the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, one of which piqued the interest of top prosecutors seeking ways to curb thefts of mobile devices.
A so-called "kill switch" would allow owners to render a stolen phone useless.
Despite the development, the prosecutors said they won't judge the new feature until they can fully determine its effectiveness.
Tuesday (June 11)
Officers in Bardstown, Ky. were dealt another blow this week after they received threats that more officers will be targeted following the slaying of one of their own.
Officer Jason Ellis was killed last month after being ambushed while he was removing debris from the road as he headed home.
The FBI and state police are investigating the matter and officers are responding to calls in teams of at least two.
In St. Louis, a police commander luckily survived an ambush while he was on a special patrol around 9:22 p.m.
Major Joseph Spiess was in uniformed driving an unmarked car when a man jogged slowly toward him and stopped before lifting his pistol and opening fire. As he sped off, the man continued shooting.
To Spiess' surprise, he was not hit by the gunman's bullets.
The understaffed police department in Antioch, Calif. is turning to the city's garbage truck drivers and mail carrier to help deter crime.
The workers have been given tips by police on how to be effective witnesses if they encounter crime while on their routes.
Wednesday (June 12)
An inmate was executed in the 1987 slaying of Florida corrections officer during a botched prison van ambush.
Corrections Officer Fred Griffis was killed in the incident as William Van Poyck attempted to free an imprisoned friend.
A raging wildfire near Colorado Springs that has destroyed dozens of homes forced the evacuation of more than 900 inmates at a state prison as a precaution.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Adrienne Jacobson said prisoners from the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility were taken to other prisons overnight due to the danger of heavy smoke.
The Boston Police Department unveiled new policies for dealing with transgender criminal suspects five months after a settlement in a May 2010 arrest.
Transgender suspects can now demand that officers call them by their adopted names, choose whether male or female officers frisk them and get a personal, private ride to court.
Thursday (June 13)
Detroit Police Officer Joseph Weekley had a chance to tell his side of the story in the 2010 police raid that left a 7-year-old dead.
Weekly, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter, said that the tragedy began when the victim's grandmother grabbed his weapon during a risky midnight raid.
He told the jurors that he remains "devastated and depressed" over the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones.
An Albuquerque police officer ending his shift helped rescue the a dozen residents, including a baby from a raging fire.
Officer Robert Mitchell was hospitalized following the rescue, but officials said his injuries were not serious.
Toronto police conducted a series of early morning raids that resulted in 43 arrests.
Officers seized 40 guns, $3 million worth of drugs and $570,000 cash, according to officials.
The owner of a home health care business in St. Louis gunned down three people who worked there before taking his own life.
Capt. Michael Sack said surveillance video shows the gunman open fire after a brief argument with others inside the business.
Friday (June 14)
A judge held a hearing to consider proposed changes for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office aimed at ensuring that the agency isn't making unconstitutional traffic stops and arrests.
U.S. District Judge Murray Snow is expected to be asked by attorneys to impose remedies that include increased training for officers, better record-keeping and a court-appointed official to monitor the agency's operations.
Family members, elected officials and other leaders gathered in Newtown, Conn. for a day of remembrance and a call to action six months after the massacre that left 20 students and six adults dead.
