NORFOLK, Va. -- One man is dead and an officer is injured after a police-involved shooting in Ghent.

About 2:40 p.m. police were called to the Wells Fargo on 21st Street and Colonial Avenue for a report of someone trying to pass a bad check, said Karen Parker-Chesson, a Norfolk police spokeswoman. Two officers arrived at the scene and approached a vehicle in the parking lot.

The driver put the car in reverse and then, as the two officers moved closer, accelerated and struck one of them. Parker-Chesson said the second officer fired at the car, killing the driver.

The officer struck by the car was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. A woman also was taken into custody, but Parker-Chesson said she wasn't sure if the woman was in the car at the time of the shooting. Neither she nor the other officer was injured.

As of about 4:15 p.m, police remained on the scene and parts of Colonial Avenue and 21st Street were closed.
