A Chicago police officer was injured when a motorist grabbed her by her bulletproof vest and sped off, dragging the officer and flinging her to the ground, authorities said.

The Gresham District officer, 30, had pulled over an SUV a little after 9 p.m. Monday near 83rd Street and Kerfoot Avenue for a traffic violation, authorities said.

When the officer approached the SUV, the driver grabbed her vest and drove off, authorities said. The officer was thrown from the SUV moments before it crashed, authorities said. The driver was taken into custody, authorities said.

The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where a sergeant told reporters, "She's banged up but she's going to be OK."

The officer was released from the hospital early this morning.

The SUV driver was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, authorities said. Charges were still pending.

Police said two children, ages, 1 and 12, were in the car at the time.
