ROME (AP) — Ten bandits armed with Kalashnikovs blocked a northern Italian highway by setting a big-rig truck on fire, blowing open an armored delivery truck with explosives and fleeing with an estimated €2 million ($2.6 million).
Police and the armored truck company said no one was injured in the heist Monday.
Marco Melatti, an official of Gruppo Battistolli armored transport service, told Italian news agency ANSA that gunmen blocked two armored delivery trucks on the northbound A9 Autostrada, which leads to Switzerland, near the town of Saronno. The gang set the rig afire, apparently part of their plan, used an explosive charge to break into one armored vehicle and escaped by car after strewing nails to slow down police in pursuit. The escape cars were later found abandoned near a farmhouse.
