NYPD Sergeant Suffers Fatal Heart Attack On Duty

A funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday for a decorated NYPD sergeant from Levittown who suffered a fatal heart attack Friday morning during a narcotics operation in Brooklyn.

Sgt. Patrick Divers, 51, a member of the Brooklyn North narcotics squad, began convulsing as he sat in a police car near Myrtle and Nostrand avenues at 10:30 a.m. Fellow officers rushed him to nearby Woodhull Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

An NYPD spokesman said there was no criminality involved in Divers' death.

A wake for Divers will be held Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Kenneth-Chapey & Sons funeral home on Hicksville Road in Bethpage.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. at Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary Church on 91 Street in Ozone Park. He will be buried at St. Charles Cemetery on Wellwood Avenue in Farmingdale.

Divers, a graduate of St. John's University, made more than 1,000 arrests and earned 35 recognitions during his 25 years with the NYPD, the department said.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. The family has declined to comment.
